Comparing NJ to Illinois is like apples to oranges. Sure if a buck has a chance to reach 4-5 years old he will be a slammer in either place. NJ has more cars per square mile than any other state.  A buck not only has to dodge hunters every year but has to traverse roads at times. Especially during the rut. That's where his chances of survival goes down.

Not comparing Illinois to Nj. I am comparing selective hunters to meat hunters. You can be in the best county,

One group of hunters shoots everything while a group of hunters 2 miles down the road pass immature bucks.

The group that shoots everything will complain there are no big bucks while filling everybody under the suns freezer while the guys down the road take a doe or 2 , pass bucks and once every year or 2 get a chance at a monster. Same county in any state you want.

Just being in the best county doesnt increase your chances at killing a good buck, passing bucks and having more of them around increases your chances of encountering one

Not to go off on a tangent but this north/south NJ thing needs to settled. The problem is that most leave out CENTRAL Jersey. Central is that area between  195 and 80. Go north of 80 and it's just a bunch of Ramapo Hill people, south of 195 you might as well be in Alabama.

Just hunt Sandy Hook.

Lots of deer there! Counted 47 in a drive out there this spring. This was less than 20 minutes and a couple that already had branch antlers by May.
