Another thing to consider - Ohio allows some good heavy hitting Straight wall cartridges.  Shorter range maybe 150 yards max; but still great deer cartridges perfectly suited for most Whitetail hunting in woods. PA and Maine and VT and NY State would allow same. If you plan on 200 yard shots obviously wrong Gun for you.   Take the .450 Bushmaster cartridge for example. Look at these cool options.  https://www.wideopenspaces.com/8-of-the-best-rifles-chambered-for-450-bushmaster-on-the-market-today/

I like idea of a single shot. Sort of like bow hunting. That CVA in stainless Is sweet.

The .450 is still a little light you might want to consider the  .950 JDJ custom made by SSK industries. It will separate the real man shooters from the back yard shooters. The only down side to it is the rounds cost about $40 each almost just a little more then some of the arrows with broad heads out there.

Dear God why would you need a .450 for a deer?

Stick to bow hunting, Jack.

The only exception I'll take was my buddy's dad (RIP) who hunted deer with us in NH using a .45 ACP carbine.  I am looking for one for nostalgia purposes, but I'll give that one a pass for hunting deer.

My father used a 444 Marlin for years in PA. Great success with it.

I have tagged everything I ever threw a .308 at. Same for .270, 06, and 30-30. Boils down to personal preference in the end. I lean to the .308

Yeah, not saying it won't work.  It's not my personal choice.  And any opportunity to troll @JHbowhunter is an opportunity not wasted.

Sapere aude.

Since you have the 30-30 and the. 35 Remington I'd go for a magnum cartridge.  Something that can reach the other side of the holler.  Lol. I prefer short actions but if the right deal pops up I'd go long action.

300wsm

270wsm.

300 rum.

Vintage Remington Pump 760/7600. The Amish Machine Gun!

Ole school gun, with alot of history.    I'm sight in 1 inch high 100 yards and can hit 4 inch pie plates all day long.   But honestly,  most guns today will suit any deer hunter, all depends on how much you want to spend.  If anything,  the scope is more important
