Popular Post Gman
So my cousin and I have been hunting the same pieces of land for 45 years together, many of the places we used to hunt now have houses but there are still a half dozen local parcels of state land that we know well and hunt. My Dad taught us how to "drive" many of these places, one of us still hunts towards the other who sits, if my cousins son is with us we typically have 2 guys sitting at the known escape routes and one guy still hunting (the "driver"). We know how the deer escape these small patches but the wind has to be right for each particular area or the "drives" just don't work. This was our second drive of the day after standing until about 10am and it was my turn to sit and to pick the escape route. Needless to say I chose the right spot. This buck came at full tilt straight down the ridge and stopped to stare at me dead on at 75 yards. I leave my scope set at 2 power as if they are running I can find them easier and if they come in cautious I have time to dial it up. I could see he had a good rack so immediately I shift my focus from the horns to the kill zone. I raised the gun and lost him in the scope, lowered the gun found him in the woods, raised the gun still on 2 power and thought he would turn tail and bolt off back the way he came. I took the shot and he took off at a diagonal towards me like he was shot out of a cannon. At about 50 yards I swing on him and squeeze the trigger just as he enters a strip of cedars and disappears over a ledge. I quickly circle back to where the cedars, begin behind me thinking he may still be in there. I text my cousin that I just shot at a nice wide buck. I see no sign of him at the end of the cedars nor do I see him running across the swamp at the bottom of the ridge. I go back to where I shot and start tracking him by the leaves he kicked up when he was hauling ass past me. I see a drop of blood just before the cedars, look down the ledge and there he is crumpled up at the bottom of the ledge, I was shocked at the size of him! He did not bleed more than a few tablespoons of blood, the bullet did not pass through, always follow up your shot guys, this buck gave me no indication that he was hit. I'm not certain but I believe I hit him with the second shot as the entry wound is a bit high and forward of the front shoulder, no exit wound. He barely bled he covered about 125 yards from the first shot and about 30 yards after the second. I will admit that I was very lucky to see and harvest this magnificent animal. What's also special about this hunt is that this particular "drive" was taught to us by my Dad who showed my cousin and I where to stand and how to "still hunt" it towards the two of us. We've killed many nice bucks in this spot but this one is special. It's the first time we have done it without my Dad who passed away in 2021. I'm sure he is smiling down at us, proud of how well he taught us. Good luck this week and please be safe!
