Just lung hit the meat should be fine. Any part of intestinal area pierced and the meat will be tainted.  Congrats!

Plenty cold last night. Even if he expired quickly. I get more worried if scavengers get to it first and their dirty bacteria-filled mouths.  Meat should be just fine. Congrats on a nice buck.

Congrats!  I keep tracking at night, and only leave if I exhausted every effort and grid searched.  I'm picky about the taste, or lack of.  Make a slice in the hind quarter and stick your nose in it before gutting.  If it smells like it's tainted I won't eat it, but it may be ok to others tastes.  45 isn't cold enough to bring the body temp down fast enough for me.  The inside of the carcass can stay warm all night even when it's below freezing.
