What kind of tree is this.

I have a few of these.  Tall and straight with very few branches.  . Impossible to split with a maul. No knots - just very stringy - worse  than elm. Looks like should split with one whack but no way.

Here is an ash and red oak for comparison. The dead oak got hung on mystery tree so dropped  it then it got hung on a dying ash. Dominos.

Come to think of it when I glass trees from stand - I look at these and see the spiny balls. So it probably is sweet gum. But very few branches because the oaks crowd them out.  Pic I see are very leafy but those are in the open
