Second Level Gardening

Recommended Posts

After dealing with crappy clay/shale soil for a couple years and last years drought turning our garden area soil to practically concrete I decided to make a new plan.

So after an hour or two drawing up a plan based on 25’ x 14’ garden area the build started. I used concrete footing bases to square up the exterior corners and put a series of 4 x 4’s into place. Next we used 5/4 x 6 decking to build the boxes up to a height of 36”

Once done I stained the outside and inner two rows then covered the interior with 6 ml plastic. Next after removing any scrap lumber tossed inside during construction I laid two layers of heavy cardboard to the bottom. Sitting back I decided to go a step further and run 130’ of poly pipe from the house to the garden and installed a sprinkler system. Next came a series of logs then smaller branches on top of that then filled with premium composted top soil. Finishing this project gave us a late start planting but being my wife has gone through some medical issues the height of the raised bed and automatic sprinkler system allows her to enjoy gardening whereas she never would’ve been able to kneel down at a traditional garden and plant. Thought I’d share this for anyone looking to create a kick ass raised bed system. Video is a quick clip of sprinklers doing their job, so glad a went with one.

Looks really, really god :happywave:well done

Is this PT wood? If it is I would be little nervous about using it for planters. Maybe that’s just me

Lined with 6ml plastic to limit wet soil from causing premature rot and act as barrier to roots. Water runs downhill ya know LOL
