You have a few years On me . I am just happy getting out in the woods and enjoying nature .The deer kill is secondary at this point in my life . When I sit in my ladder ,hang on or climber I reflect on the guys I use to hunt with that have passed away  or are not able to hunt because health reasons. Then I realize how lucky I am to still be able to do what I love to do .I do Understand we are not the Men we use to be but we are still out there .I hope at 74 I am still here and still hunting .  Enjoy everyday you wake up . Who is the fat Lady

I think of my dad who passed away in 2008 and my good friend and hunting partner Sammy he passed away 5 years ago.....also think of my best friend of 51 years who doesn't really hunt anymore due to health issues but he wants to go so badly.....

Why wouldn't you just get the neck issue resolved? A pinched nerve could be a simpler fix than realized.

Never give up. I’m 74 and still jump shoot quicksand salt marshes where other people got stuck in the mud up to their necks. As you get older you need to hunt smarter.

I'm so disgusted with myself. When I was 16 the kids said here it's a cigarette smoke it it's cool. 👎

Greybeard is 101 and hunts daily. We all get bucked off the horse. Get up, wipe yourself off, and get back on the horse.....

Old nuts and bolts, but not that old.

230jhp,  Got to keep pushing harder as you get older.  Nothing works like it used to.  Don't give in.  Find a partner or another way to get motivated.  Forget about using a stand and enjoy hiding on the ground anyplace you want to. Don't worry about the other guys hunting where you want to hunt.  If they're not there when you get there then they need to find another spot that day.

Both my biceps are torn.  My knee has been swollen for 5 or 6 years.  Was grinding as I walked for about a year before it ground down whatever was grinding and now it pops in and out all the time.  Had 2 cortizone shots and PT for my lower back issues when I was 40.  Now the pain goes down the back of both legs and hurts bad all the time especially when stepping over logs or rocks.  Sometimes so bad I can't bend to pick anything up.  I'm probably in the first stage of dementia, like to sleep in the woods, can't hear deer, can't see deer, muffed a shot at a nice buck with the muzzy.  Cereal in the morning gives me enough gas in the afternoon to clear the mountain of deer.  I'm letting them walk to avoid the drag and work butchering them, but living with it all to keep doing what I love is better than dying on the couch.  Hope I still feel the same when I'm your age.  Maybe do more fishing, hiking, small game, and relax a bit deer hunting

back/neck issues started late 2014 but by fall 2015 I was in pain but struggled to draw my bow back....the issues at hand subsided with treatment and drawing my bow become easier but, then it was 3 years ago while drawing on a really big buck I heard and even felt a "POP" in the area I have issues, I couldn't hold the draw......time for a crossbow !!!

went back to my surgeon, & PT as well, then a MRI that showed when compared to the original MRI things got worst with some added issues.....this past winter when we had huge snow storm I ended up getting sciatica......did the PT thing, did stretching all end up being a band aid.....seeing my Chiropractor did help to a point with all my issues.....3 different doctors viewing my history confirmed surgery but I'm not ready for it at this time.......

Having a really sub par hunting season this year. I think it's age related at 74yo.

Lost two deer while hunting with the X-bow. Last year I could no longer draw my 60# compound so I went to a 40# recurve. This year I cannot hold the recurve consistently at my anchor point. I'm having neck issues with a pinched nerve that causes weakness in my left arm. So I went to an X-bow. Lord I hate that effin thing.. It weighs a ton and is awakward to handle in the treestand.

I did find some new hunting areas in the Z6 portion of NWS. Last spring I purchased a cheap climber I could leave in the woods. The first place I put it I found there was a ladder stand 50 yards away the first day I hunted it.  I moved it to the Z3 portion of NWS only to find a note on it some other guy had a lock-on nearby. So I moved it again.Again finding another lock on near by.

I moved it to a different area in NWS Z6 that is near the property line, but a legal safe distance from any houses.

I hunted there from the ground in September. I gut shot a doe with the scope and my glasses fogged up on a very damp morning. Overconfidence with the X-bow accuracy caused me to make the errant shot. Couldn't find the doe after an extensive grid search.

With the climber in that area the first and only time I hunted it there was a note on the tree complaining I was too close to someone's house. Although it was at least 100 yards from any houses. As I was climbing the tree some fat woman came and gave me a hard time. An hour later a decent 6pointer (at least) showed up following a doe and making scrapes as he went. I let a bolt fly at 50 yards. He went about 50 yards and stopped for a while then followed the doe in the direction of the property line. The blood trail was bright red blood, but not much of it. I didn't want to push him so I decided to come back in the morning..Big mistake because I didn't look at the weather report. It rained that night and the next day. I was back in the morning doing a grid search in the rain with no luck.

On the upside I made a new friend that has an excellent GSP. I've been pheasant hunting with him several times. The downside of that is my neck problems inhibit my ability to bring the shotgun up when swinging on a bird. Last time I went I shot four times without hitting a bird.

Firearm deer hunting has been problematic as well. Near one of my Z3NWS spots someone installed a ladder stand.  I have a lock on in Z6NWS I was using with the X-bow. It seems like the deer have vacated that area since September/October.  I was in it once with my resurected S&W 916T this past week. I can still hunt it to the end of the year with the X-bow.

Especially since I haven't had much success fishing this year either I'm starting to feel like Santiago in the Old Man and the Sea. I retired from work four years ago, maybe it's time to retire from hunting and fishing as well

Yeah it sucks getting old but we all will. Just have to keep going and make the best of your time out. Sorry you lost 2 deer with the crossbow but remember it is a bow and not a gun. Yes they can kill out there but still it's a broadhead. I'm stuck using one but I haven't shot over 31 yards. Always wanted to kill a deer out 50-80 yards but just can't get myself to pull the trigger. Just don't feel I should even if I can do it. Keep your shots to the same as you used to do with the compound.

Most of it is your attitude, or state of mind. If you want to quit, you will. If you want to keep going, you will. With some obstacles, it gets harder to want to do some things, but that too is relative.

After a surgery that went bad in 2014, almost a year later I couldn't use my right arm for much, and I'm right handed, I was feeling sorry for myself. Standing in line at Disney, feeling the woe-is-me, I noticed someone in front of me with only one arm, and later that day, a Vet walking with one leg and a prosthetic. Suddenly, I felt fortunate to still have the arm, even if it only worked some of the time. Always someone that has it worse.

After a few years of doing my own PT at home, I got back to about 75 percent use of my right arm, some of the time. Most of the time, I involuntarily use my neck muscles to lift my arm, which has caused neck issues, besides the 4 levels that are bone on bone because the discs are gone. I go to a chiropractor that says in his 36 years, my neck is the worst he's seen. I have other issues, like random nerve and muscle pain, sciatica, and these random muscle spasms, like violent, long lasting spasms, of undiagnosed origin (well, sort of).

Since July, I haven't been able to chew food because my jaw doesn't work right, no trauma, just woke up that way one day. For someone who likes to cook, and eat, as much as I do, that's pretty traumatic. Been to all kinds of doctors and specialists. Dentists says my teeth are fine, so it's a joint or muscle issue. Oral surgeon put 20 shots of Botox in my face to paralyze the muscles she thought were pulling my jaw out of alignment, didn't work, made it worse actually.  Had 3 CT's of my face and neck, MRI of the jaw and neck, x-rays, blood tests, exams, etc. etc.. No arthritis or TMJ in my joints, in fact, they show normal jaw alignment. Exhausted my resources in NJ, so my doctor sent me to Jefferson in Philly, and oral surgeon recommended specialists at Penn Medicine. Saw 3 specialists there, the answers I got were "no clue", "I'm stumped" and "Don't know what to tell you".

So, it's still soft, over-cooked food that I can smash against the roof of my mouth with my tongue, soups, and smoothies, and still no idea what is wrong. Monday I go for a biopsy of something on my thyroid, which they say has nothing to do with my jaw, but may be why I haven't been able to sleep more than 2 or 3 hours a night for 9 months.

So can't eat, can't sleep, bad left knee and right hip, chronic back and neck pain and stiffness, and need both shoulders replaced, and I'm not quite 60 yet, and there are people worse off than me.  Oh, and when doing the CT of my jaw, they noticed I have what's called Silent Sinus Syndrome. My right sinus is almost completely collapsed, and sucking in the boney structures around it (it acts like a vacuum chamber when it collapses), including the floor of the right orbital socket, so my right eye is sinking. When Jefferson saw that, they scheduled me for sinus surgery on the spot.  Cheer up, you're not doing too bad.

I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America and to the Republic for which it stands, one nation UNDER GOD, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.
