Turkey Down

Went to our first two spots and didn't waste too much time there.  Did not hear anything and I had not been seeing any during the week their while working on the property.  We were really about done by 7am and heading home to eat and get some rest before an afternoon baseball game.  I decided to drive back past a spot I had not hunted in a while.  As we were driving by I looked out in the field and saw a big fan out there.   We pulled into the driveway and spoke to the property owner and he confirmed we could still hunt.  As I was talking to the owner the turkey was only 80 yards away and coming closer with some hens!  It's a farm with all kinds of animals all around the house and adjacent barns.  After speaking with the owner, we got our gear on.  The turkey was now 100 yards away and moving farther.  We snuck past the house and walked about 300 yards and set up on the edge of the field hoping to pull him away from the house and barns.  There were 4 or 5 hens out in the field also.   I set my son up against a hay bale and I stood in the thick vegetation on the hedgerow behind him looking out above the 3 foot tall grass.  I made a few calls could see a white head coming thru the high grass,  he started strutting and then he started coming across the field at a steady walk.  300 yards he came, steadily, and at 35 yards I was thinking, he better shoot now!  I whispered "shoot him".   Little did I know with him being seated he only just at that moment was able to see the gobblers head.  I yelped, the turkey stopped, and he shot dropping the turkey stone dead.   I knew the pellet spread was about the size of a pie plate at that distance with the new Carlson's choke and Longbeard XR shells.  We had practiced with them the week before.  What a season for him, after only a jake last year.  Turkey was 23#, 1.5 spurs and a 10.25 beard, his largest bird yet.  Thanks for reading and good luck to everyone this week!
