Scotch/Scotch Blend Recommendations?

So Saturday is a 40th birthday dinner for a good friend of mine, he likes his scotch and scotch blends. 

Wanted to get him something different but still similar to what he prefers, but I know very little about scotch. 

I can only tell you what he tends to like which are Glenfiddich, Glen Livet, Glenmorangie, and Johnnie Walker.

Any time there is a party (holidays, birthdays, etc)...someone brings a JW Blue Label and it's gone in short order.

I could get him something like a 12/15/18 yr old of the above scotches too to play it safe, but figured I'd ask if anyone here is into scotch.

 

Any recommendations?

Price I'd like to hang in the $200 and under crowd, but he's a good friend, so I'd splurge another $100 if it was worth the stretch

My mom drank Dewers, but we were close to being poor, so I doubt it was any fancy stuff!  Very nice gesture for your friend tho!!  Im sure he will love the thought!!  And of course.......drink responsibly my friends!!

Balvenie 17 Doublewood is another good option.

Unless he has a super sophisticated palette it is unlikely he could tell a $100 bottle from a $300. So do like I do, get the cheaper whisky but bigger bottle!

Lagavulin 16 year.  Not going to find much better in that under $100 price range.  No need to spend any more than that

Everyone has their preferences.  

 

I'm not much of a scotch drinker overall, but the Lagavulin is the one that always brings me back to it. 

 

When I'm in the mood to sip, my preference is for Cognacs and Bourbons.  

 

People should just drink what they like.  Unfortunately, I think some people drink scotch because they think it's cool or because they think they're supposed to like it.  If you don't like it, don't drink it

Dewars 12 blue label is a good blend, and they do sell a 1.5L bottle (the double size). Balvenie 12 doublewood is a great single malt

When my buddy was having his first kid I wanted to get a nice bottle to celebrate. Didn't want to go the typical Johnnie blue route and ended up with a bottle of Midleton. It's a nice blend and has become our go to between friends for special occasions(kids, weddings, divorces.....) I just saw bourbon street on rt. 22 in Lebanon had a bottle on sale for 145
