Started in the Pines to find and photograph the rare Dragon's Mouth Orchid.

Back to north Jersey to see if we could find Yellow Lady's Slippers.

 

Showy Orchis nearly done for the year, as we transition from forested uplands to emergent wetlands.

Smaller Yellow Lady's Slippers in the wetland.

On the hike up to the Ridge - Pink Lady's Slippers.  Five orchid day - not too bad.

 

Beauty with the NC in the background.

Time for a few beers and watch the Yanks whoop KC.  Again.

great job seeking out all the orchids, amazing to think that they still hang on inthis the craziest population state in the nation.  Tillman's ravine was a fav to walk around mothers day to see the pink lady cyps

Great pics LittleM.  Saved a big black snake the other day that thought sunning itself on a blacktop road was good idea . Very ornery guy as he was not happy I helped persuade him to move on . Coiled up and struck at me several  times before moving on . I think it was a rat snake .

Great pix, LittleM. I did do a minor search for NM rattlers this morning, but it’s a rare wet year and the vegetation is too high to safely explore some of the better rock outcropping and rock pile areas. I was in shorts and Kean sandals. I did find what is either another bull or another gopher snake. Seems the online photos are confusing with those two. Gophers aren’t supposed to be near here.

I was told that their range and counting the number of scales on some specific part of their body was the only real way to tell - specially on the young ones.
