Started in the Pines to find and photograph the rare Dragon's Mouth Orchid.

Back to north Jersey to see if we could find Yellow Lady's Slippers.

Great pics LittleM.  Saved a big black snake the other day that thought sunning itself on a blacktop road was good idea . Very ornery guy as he was not happy I helped persuade him to move on . Coiled up and struck at me several  times before moving on . I think it was a rat snake .

Great pix, LittleM. I did do a minor search for NM rattlers this morning, but it’s a rare wet year and the vegetation is too high to safely explore some of the better rock outcropping and rock pile areas. I was in shorts and Kean sandals. I did find what is either another bull or another gopher snake. Seems the online photos are confusing with those two. Gophers aren’t supposed to be near here.

I was told that their range and counting the number of scales on some specific part of their body was the only real way to tell - specially on the young ones.
