Lunatic, that Bittern is crazy looking. I think I saw a hen pheasant that looked like that at Suicide Flats in Flatbrook WMA this past fall, lol. She couldn't get out of there fast enough..

 

 

Not a very common bird in NJ. His cousin Least Bittern is even harder to find and I have never seen one.

Striped bass will follow your every move with their eyes. But when they grow old, big and wise they learn to cover their eyes.

hey, I looked at your picture again, this time on my PC instead of my cell, and I am thinking your bird is an even more rare Least Bittern. The lower body looks blue, unless the shadow makes it look that way?

I have never seen one so I don't have any pictures but I found this pic on internet:

Was getting near dark and i  was with my buddy yesterday in a reservoir in Sullivan county NY fishing for walleye that would not cooperate. And this eagle landed near us out of nowhere. It was cool he watched us fish. This picture was the best I could get with my phone with the distance and height he was..
