New Turkey Contest Scoring Method with AHRS

Per the recent contest topics @Devil Horns pointed out we don't have the check stations and sheets to work with any longer per the following:

Report your harvest via the Automated Harvest Reporting System (by phone or online as printed on every hunting license and permit). During the fall season, a turkey harvest must be reported by 7 p.m. During Youth Turkey Hunting Day, hunting periods A, B, C and the first three Saturdays of hunting period E, the turkey harvest must be reported by 3 p.m. During hunting period D and the last Saturday of hunting period E, the turkey harvest must be reported by 9 p.m. If unable to access the Automated Harvest Reporting System by the designated time, the turkey shall be reported immediately by telephone to the nearest Fish and Wildlife Law Enforcement office listed on page 12. The hunter must continue to attempt accessing the Automated Harvest Report System until they receive a Confirmation Number for that turkey. When reporting, you will be asked for the turkey’s sex, age (juvenile or adult), beard measurement (equal to or greater than 6 inches, or less than 6 inches), and spur measurement (equal to or greater than ½ inch, or less than ½ inch). Again, please take the measurements BEFORE you begin the reporting process.

Our previous scoring was as follows:

  • You must report all turkeys and check station sheets on the contest entries topic with the following requirements:
  • Your entry must include a picture of you with the turkey.
  • Your entry must include a picture of the check station sheet showing weight, beard length and spur length. You can block out personal information, however, the sheet MUST show everything else. If the sheet cannot be read, it will not count.  The numbers on the check sheet will be the numbers used for scoring, no exceptions.

What are the options for the new AHRS system and how can we get fair scoring for the turkeys (especially considering scales won't be certified so weights could be off).  Thoughts?

The main problem is if we use NWTF scoring, we need the weight.  So how do we get the weight fairly?  Or do we go with some other non-NWTF scoring approach?

It will be somewhat honor system but with catch n release tournaments each participant needs the same scale.  Or could require going to a certified scale such as bait shop.  This one is cheap enough.

Maybe come up with a couple of NJWW “approved” cheap fishing scales. Theoretically we all need scales to weigh/measure and check-in our turkeys regardless of whether we are in a contest or not.

Looks like AHRS doesn't need weight?

When reporting, you will be asked for the turkey’s sex, age (juvenile or adult), beard measurement (equal to or greater than 6 inches, or less than 6 inches), and spur measurement (equal to or greater than ½ inch, or less than ½ inch)

Their is an easy way to weigh a bird.

Carry dead bird into house. Disregard dripping blood and muddy boots.

Go into  bedroom and get wife's scale.  Turn scale on. Step on scale holding dead bird.  Once you have a weight toss bird into bed and weigh your self.  Now you know how much your bird weighs.  Lol. ;)

Be sure to tell wife to vacuum the mud and blood.

LOL

Seems like most other contests I see will go with spur and beard lengths.  Just not sure how different scores will be

I agree keep it simple Beards and Spurs.
