Over the last few years, the deer herd has diminished tremendously in Sussex County, specifically in Zone 5. I have chosen not to get a doe permit for years in hopes of seeing some type of rebound. This was great to see when I checked one of my cameras today. All does, not a buck in sight..

Like you I noticed the herd way down in zone 4, all public land and I can only police myself. I refuse to purchase a shotgun permit, in fact I have shot one doe in the last 12 years. Bow, or muzzleloader seasons anterless deer get a free pass from me. This year I have seen larger groups of deer and every time I hunted this year I've seen branch antler bucks

I live and hunt in zone 5 and there are more deer here than you know what to do with. I keep seeing posts about a diminishing herd but I don't see it. Every year each Doe has 2-3 fawns. Unless you were on an extinction mission to wipe them all out there are more than enough to go around.

I am seeing a refreshing uptick in z5 deer numbers this season, and definitely more does than last year. In my local area (a few square miles) I still observed more bucks than does (true does, not counting fawns). If you are in z5 and are overun with deer - then it's not getting enough hunting pressure and you should PM me for help...   Where Jay lives - a lot of the issue is because 10 years ago, the forests had been so overbrowsed there is literally no undergrowth at all, and most of the forest is mature and in need of some cuts, combined with too much unlimited antlerless.

Nothing spooks deer more than my stank…

This year I saw way more bucks then does...Just wish the 6 months of hunting and unlimited antlerless hunts would end, just my opinion

The state allowing unlimited doe and hunters taking their lead have destroyed the deer heard in this state. There might be pockets of deer in areas but for the most part the deer population is way down. The state has no clue about management of wildlife.
