They check this house every year and never nest in it. However, the multi family duplex they usually pick was destroyed by the storm so I am thinking this maybe the year for this little house.

I am fortunate enough to live on a small, fresh water lake and that's a great bird attractant.

Both. I am using 100-400mm zoom lens but to get the type of detail you see in pic 2 of post #4, on a small bird, you have to be very close, +- 15'

Cool! I've been contemplating getting a 200-500 for awhile now. I like nature photography but definitely tough to get close enough for the detail with lower focal length glass.

Yes it is. I say 400 is a minimum and maybe Canon 100-400 mm zoom lens is the most versatile lens you can get for this purpose. When you get to 500 things get big and it requires additional equipment. Almost all my pics are freehand and when you get to 500 or more a good tripod is a necessary addition and one more thing to carry.

Yes for sure. Monopod goes a long way for a lightweight but useful support. And definitely tough to shoot freehand with the super telephotos. Lot of glass to haul around
