Snakes of NJ

Real interesting thread. Glad I made the switch to this site haha can anyone shed some info on this snake I found? Found it while wading the Ramapo River in north jersey. When I tried to sneak up to get a closer picture in crept into the water and swam right between my legs. Hard to see but it's next to the log. It was pretty long too at the very least 3' but I'm trying to under exaggerate

 

Looks huge, how big was it?

 

Based on where it was and what it did I would have said northern water snake.  But it looks like a black rat snake.

I'm going to say it was about 4' or better...I said 3' before trying to undershoot. Maybe 3" thick as well

I would say rat or racer.  I can't zoom in enough to see the scales or any pattern (damn you, JPEG compression).

Saw a big garter snake last week, as well as a small what I think was a milk snake, but it was moving and didn't get a good look. Also lots of painted turtles digging nests!! Saw like 12 of them!!
