Deer Ticks,Black Bears, + DEET.

Recommended Posts

Well- Next Monday is the opener. Instead of using Permethrin again on my Cloths and Daypack,I sit on and have another Black Bear investigate my Calling Location,I will be using my proven " to me" - Clothes  and Daypack protection of up to 40% DEET.

I have had a good 3 Black Bears Lumber on away from me after Grunting over the years. My clothes were sprayed well with either Cutter,Repel,or Deep Woods.

I also now take in a 7.5 oz. Big Can of Cutter Backwoods/ High Deet. I prefer the Spray rather then the slower pump . Up here in the North Counties - there are huge Boulders everywhere.  Never know if a Black Bear is close.

Mostly though,I don't want to kill one . Almost had to last Spring. The old Bead on the nose + Copper plated #4s. I had no DEET on that day.    For my Neck, I use something with no DEET.

I can't  prove any of this. Permitherin  does not seem to faze them while DEET Makes them Snort  and Lumber off.

I always carry 2 Good Knifes when,I Hike as well.  I understand  there are not many Black Bears in South Jersey.   Give it  some years. Right now you guys are Lucky.

Take The Multiple Use Area Challenge.

You yankees up north just have to do yo' job -- the hunt has been re-instated.. so no excuses!

Just pretend that every time (a bear's) bell is rung, an angel gets his wings! ;) Go kill a bear.

You sound scared of bears. I have seen very few aggressive, rather most are curious.

Yup; I’ve had a couple of bears climb up my stand.  Once they realized I was in my stand they raced down and ran off.

Carry the bear pepper spray

in ny fishers and coyotes coming  in to the calls is more common for me.   Fishers are nasty.

i will Admit seeing bear cubs on May 1 not much bigger than a paint can was pretty cool but extremely unnerving at the same time

Unfortunately in nj that's not a legal option only allowed to carry 3/4 of an oz.  Now I don't know if a warden would write it but get the wrong police officer that stops you and it could go bad for you

Unlikely.

Are you suggesting DEET is a bear repellent?

I thought it only worked on ticks.

Tractor Supply, I add 1oz to 16oz of water, shake well in a spray bottle, spray your clothes allow to dry and those little creatures stay off and this bottle last a long time and cheaper then other products like Sawyers

Martin's Control Solutions Permethrin 13.3% Insecticide, 8 oz.

Agreed but there are officers who believe you can't have hallow point bullets at all.

And here's a scenario that plays in my head. I don't carry bear spray but I could see this happening to someone Get stopped for a minor traffic violation on way to or from hunting with bear spray.  That hunter has a ccw.  The way the law is written of notification that individual has to inform that there is a fire arm in the car even if not carrying.  Officer decides to look further or even just sees the can of bear spray it is technically an illegal weapon.

It's like ccw most officers I know wouldn't hassle for having it in say apple bees but law says no ccw in restaurants that serve alcohol.   I wouldn't risk it.  Yes it's concealed but God forbid someone sees it.  In addition to that everything is on camera now so it's hard for an officer to have that discretion and I would never want to put one in that position

Bears, I deal with them every time I go in the woods, they aren't an issue ...I put my camera back out yesterday and got it back from repairs...walking in I had bear 30 yards away, while setting up the camera, and just put our a bucket of minerals  two more bears came in and got within 15 yards I just yelled  out and off they went
