Making Pickles

Recommended Posts

Been a long time since put up any canning had a bad experience with a batch gone bad. so I limit my self to a few Jars and refrigerating rather That Canning. One trick I got in Lancaster was adding some Liquid from store-bought pickles. Like adding the Liquid from hot peppers. I do up a lot of Pickled Eggs like a dozen at a time many ways and styles. I have just added them to a Jar that had pickles in it from dill to Hot peppers,  wait a week and watch them disappear.  Back in the day My Mother did up all Veg. had a Pantry full of good eating and now The many times I yearn for canned veg. over frozen. I am just using up my pickled Watermelon rind fro 2 weeks ago 2 quarts. will make more but wait till better mellows show up. with thicker rinds. I all so do a Tomato Pickled relish I don't can but freeze in bags.

Nice.

I was also going to ask if anyone here did any veggie fermentation. I eat fermented veggies every day and sick of having to pay for them.  I've been eyeballing some crocks and jars on amazon to get me started with it

Go for it.

You can make/ferment many things you like such as: Vegies, Sour Kraut, Deli Style pickles, the list goes on forever.

The "Crock" in my opinion is the best way to do many things.

Check around other sites about "Fermenting Foods".

They may have information you need to choose which size Crock, and might offer quality Crocks at a cheaper price than Amazon.

Shop different sites to gain information and knowledge first.

Then go shopping for one you seem to like.

Good Luck.

Ephesians Chapter 6:12

Joshua Chapter 1:9
Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.

Here are a few quick places to check out.

My opinion would be to get something good at first. Quality matters.

Check into a water fill around the upper rim/lid type of fermenter crock.

Thanks for all of the info Bill. I appreciate it.  I'll look more in to it later tonight and I'll check out what I can find on Amazon as well.  I'll be sure to keep you posted on my progress

Look at it this way.....

By acquiring a quality Crock Pot up front, will eventually pay for itself.

How fast that you will break even, depends on how much you currently spend and the amount of fermented foods you consume.

Go for it, you will not regret it.

That Sausage site I sent you info on, even sells kits you can purchase, to start you to start off right out of the gate.

Enjoy:up:

We eat a jar each week, at the cost of $6-8 per jar.  The crock would pay for itself in no time.  I also have a farm share at Genesis Farms in Blairstown, so I have an abundance of veggies to ferment.  I'll be ordering a crock very soon
