Line voltage I'm guessing? Try putting an old school dimmer on them. Changes the intensity big time.

I'm always on the look out to salvage materials. 

That wood in the pic came from some old out buildings on a farm that were falling down. 

I lightly power washed  and

I squared the edges a bit on a table saw to minimize the gaps. Also cut out damaged wood. If you want bigger gaps,  make sure to paint the surface behind  black  to avoid seeing thru the cracks or joints. 

If you are getting wood, take more than you think you will need. 

there is a lot of waste once you start cutting it up. 

Even if the wood is crap, you can still make trim pieces out of it. 

You want to take precautions and treat the wood or have it kiln dried to kill any insects in the wood.

I went for the 1st gun season but didn't see anything I wanted to shoot.
