Wild Fruit Identification

Wife and I were out hanging a stand today and came across this fruit bearing tree. Not exactly sure what it is (gut tells us orange)... broke the fruit open and it smells like citrus...

 

Any one have an idea and if the deer would/could hit it once it falls?

Yup, osage orange.  I saw your post before you added the photo.  That's osage orange.

No idea about edibility with deer, only that it is naturalized in most of the country after being planted all over.  It is actually in the mulberry family and only very distantly related to the orange tree we think of when someone says oranges.

The first picture looks like black walnut to me.  Those are not osage orange leaves.

Black Walnut.  I have a big one bordering my backyard.  Hate that tree.  It's basically a giant weed...LOL.  Amazing heartwood, but other than that it's a huge weed to me.

Leaves look like walnut but I'm far from an expert  Google search both and you'll see the difference

My first thought was black walnut too. Parents still have 2 big trees. Great for throwing at each other when we were kids. Used to leave a trail of them going down the river duck hunting. Boat be full of them. Thanks for the memory.

Looks like walnut. Tough to tell from pics. Osage fruit is truly size of florida oranges. Walnuts are smaller. Leaf is narrow compared to osage. I bet walnut. Walnut is more common here. Some osage in central jersey....tons in Illinois. GREAT for bow wood, flooring, & hottest burning wood there is
