Guess bucks are keeping their racks

Correct me if I'm wrong, but bucks holding antlers late is a bad thing, right? It means they get a late start on next year's rack, and just starts a vicious cycle of racks getting smaller and smaller each year.

The trigger for deer to grow their new set of antlers is the amount of increasing sunlight coming in to their eyes and the hardening occurs with the decrease of sunlight and increase in testosterone for the breeding season.  The drop in the level of testosterone is the trigger for them to shed in addition to the health of the buck. The better condition the deer is in the later the shed happens.  The tissue between the pedicle and the antler base weakens and the antler falls off.  I have seen deer in Canada with their racks still attached as late as March 25. In addition to our North Amercian deer species, there are species around the world that go through a similar process.  Genetics and nutrition play the major roles in antler size.
