Contest Rules

1. NJ Birds only. Must be taken with a gun, bow, or crossbow.

2. All F&G laws in effect.

3. Limit ONE bird per contestant.  However, you may upgrade to a larger bird during the course of the season if you harvest a higher scoring bird.

4. You must report all turkeys in the contest entries topic with the following requirements:

  • Your entry must include a picture of you with the turkey
  • Your entry must include all of the turkey's beard lengths and pictures of each beard length
  • Your entry must include both of the turkey's spur lengths and pictures of each spur length
  • Your entry must include the spur and beard scoring portions of the NWTF score (https://www.nwtf.org/hunt/records/score)

NWTF reference for measuring:

Spur measuring:

Measure each spur. Spurs must be measured along the outside center, from the point at which the spur protrudes from the scaled leg skin to the tip of the spur. Add both spur measurements and multiply the combined length of the spurs by 10. This is the number of points you receive for the turkey’s spurs.

Beard measuring:

Measure the beard length (a beard must be measured from the center point of the protrusion of the skin to the tip) and convert it to decimal form.

Next, multiply the beard length figure by 2; this is the number of points you receive for the beard length. If you have an atypical bird (multiple beards), measure each beard, convert them to a decimal number, then add those figures together and multiply by two. This is the number of points you receive for your turkey’s beards.

5. Scores will be the total of the NWTF scoring portions for spur and beard measurements

6. Contest signup ends at 9:00PM on Friday April 23rd, 2021 which is the night before youth day.  Contest runs the entire legal NJ spring gobbler season. All birds must be entered by end of day Saturday 05/29/2021 (day after the final day of the 2021 NJ Spring Turkey season), as this will allow birds shot in the final evening to be checked in the next day.

Measure to 1/8 of an inch and round down?

I've further revised the scoring to match what many of you are familiar with, which is the NWTF scoring approach.  Follow their same guidelines and what you would do for NWTF scoring (minus the weight aspect).  This will make the most sense for many turkey hunters.  The current NWTF scoring page doesn't indicated how to round, what is the common practice for turkey hunters?
