Tennessee snake ID

I'm usually pretty good with snake ID but this one has me confused. Pattern looks like a corn snake but is black like a black rat. About 3-1/2 feet long

Saw this guy laying on the road of a park so I stopped and made sure it got back into the woods!

He was not very nice though LOL

When I touched it with my boot he went right into defense mode ready to strike and vibrating it's tail.

Beautiful snake!

That's actually a pretty cool adaptation when you consider Tennessee has two species of rattlesnakes.  Mimic a more dangerous snake when confronted by an enemy.  Brilliant!
