getting the muzzle loader license

Recommended Posts

now according to this Q&A section off the njdep site about getting the muzzle loader license i could skip the walking and shooting portion AND if i take the Huntercourse.com class online all i would have to do is show up with course passing certificate and they will give me the permit for muzzle loader? can it be that easy?

Q. I already hunt with a Firearm or All-around License. Do I need to take the Firearms Course to obtain a NJ Rifle Permit in order to hunt with a rifle or muzzleloader?
A. If a person has previously taken the Shotgun Course, or has a Firearm or All-Around License, but has not taken the Rifle/Muzzleloader Hunter Education Course, they need to complete the Firearms Course. Those who bring their license or shotgun hunter education card to the course may bypass the field walk and portions of the range.

I just did it a couple weekends ago.  Only ever had my shotgun licence and wanted rifle and bow.  I filled out the booklet and took that and my shotgun license to the test day and showed them the book and the license.  I skipped the shotgun shoot and the walk, just listened to the rifle "lecture" (took like 15 minutes) then shot my bow (you wont have to do that) and then took the written test (you will only have to do the "general" and "firearms" sections of the written test) it was a very streamlined process

ML hunting is a blast. The guns are very accurate and reasonably priced. I highly recommend blackhorn 209 powder

:agree: Blackhorn 209 definitely...Only powder I will use in my mountain rifle. Dean at Stokes Sport Shop carries it....

Never understood why people pay $25.00 for the online course. It only lets you bypass the field walk, which is probably the one part of the course that new hunters and old should take. You get a lot of great information from seasoned instructors, that you can't get from an online course. And it doesn't cost anything, except a little bit of your time.

Cleaning my CVA Mountain Rifle is painless, especially with the BlackHorn powder....Unscrew the breech plug, swab/clean the opened barrel like any other long gun. My son now shoots my Black Diamond .50 cal which is a bit more involved and time consuming to clean...
