Need Help with Tree ID

I took a walk in the woods after work today and came across a big tree that fell down that I thought may be a good candidate for the woodstove (plus its easily accessible).  I am not the greatest at identifying trees and figured somebody on here might know what this is by the bark.  My best guesses were ash or locust.  What do you think it is?

Looks like hickory.  Burns really well but leaves a lot of ash.  

 

Any pictures of the branches and buds?

Hickory or Mountain Ash. Either way, great firewood.

not a shag bark hickory - but what I call "Standard Hickory"... Hard wood - does not burn as hot as oak, but it's adequate to burn.

Hickory is rated as one of the hottest burning woods.  But I don't like dealing with the ash it produces.

interesting chart - based on my experience, I would say either Oak burns hotter/better than Hickory. Yes - Hickory does leave a lot of Ash, same as the Ash trees do.  It's a hardwood - burn it!

I agree.  Being a wood snob, I don't burn anything but oak.

Thanks!  The leaves were in bad shape and pretty shriveled up, so there wasn't much to take a pic of.  I will get a pic of the buds when I go back there.
