What created these holes?

Slow day at the office so I decided to research some photos I took of a tree in my yard.  It has a whole bunch of holes in it, and I think I know what made them.  But I thought I'd have some fun and post them and see what other folks think made these holes.

 

No prize for the correct answer except for bragging rights.

Man, that was too easy.  Yes, you're correct.  Because the holes are all neat and in a row, more than likely it was done by a yellow-bellied sap sucker.

You should see my poor apple trees.  Between the beetles, the bears, and the sapsuckers they're a mess.

If you look closely, other critters like to take advantage of the sapsucker's work to store various nuts and seeds for later.  I've seen birds, chipmunks and squirrels all fill in holes to cache food.

Next week, I'll be in Virginia cutting down over a dozen apple trees on my parent's farm. I'll be bringing some wood back for my smoker. Let me know if you want any?

 You aint kidd'n..  My apple trees are covered with holes.. Trunk, limbs, branches.. Not a piece of wood on my trees are free of those holes..
