That is utterly painful to look at

I agree. Painful. I had bad flashing that kept leaking and then had a chimney specialist do it right, as electric describes for you above.ย  I feel your pain Michael Britt. Id recommend my guy but he's more southern Hunterdon than Warren. But does a great job, is an avid fisherman, and his crew are all hunters. Good luck. If it doesn't look like Electrical diagram I wouldn't pay them. IMHO, whoever did that existing job doesn't know what they're doing or is a crookย

Just talked to a friend of a friend for an independent opinion.

He said he has seen rare cases where the chimney block is so saturated that it just acts as a giant sponge top to bottom, as the water migrates down block by block. He said the best approach is if the boiler exhaust could be re-routed, perhaps to the chimney the wood stove is tied into (which is outside the house), then they could remove the roof portion of main chimney, close it up with plywood, and then shingle over it. Said will never be another leak again after that.

I did find water at base of chimney once, see below.

Your friend gave you super poor advice. You canโ€™t mix different fuel types within a single flue.
