Saw this buck at Sandy Hook on 1/3/18

Recommended Posts

In November '16, I led a fishing trip down there and we watched a buck larger than that at North Beach at the furthest dune between the parking area and the ocean (closest to the ocean, not the lot) on lockdown with a lone doe.  She was bedded on the sand, out in the open, with no cover anywhere nearby.  The peninsula actually has better deer food than you might think.  Lots of shrubs, cactus without the spines, fruit like salt spray rose, beach plums, spartina grass, and other items including seaweed which washes up and is very rich in nutrition.  That and no legal hunting will allow deer to grow old and large.
