Who keeps the official bear tag? Taxidermist or butcher?

Got my first bear last week. Was not too big but was my first. Taxidermist skinned the bear and gave me the meat but no tag.

Was just wondering who normally keeps the official tag they put on the bear's ear.

The tag stays with the hide. Even after you get the hide tanned or mounted you leave the tag in the ear.

I remember the metal bands that u git fir deer my taxidermist would keep it and give it back when mount was complete

I just write the # down..cut off and hand the hunter the tag back right away.

I have quite a few tanned hides, rugs, and mounts.  None have the tag in the ear.  That would look ridiculous.   I've no idea where any of my tags are.....

Same here. Just wondering if I would need the tag number to ship it abroad as a gift for someone in Europe...

wouldnt it make sense for the tag to be with the bear at all times? if its at the butcher, then the butcher has it, taxidermist then they have it. if its hanging on your wall then you have it. 

anywhere the bear meat or hide goes the tag should go. once its in its final resting place(your wall) then the tag is with you somewhere like your gun safe or somewhere else in your home.

I don't see why the tag would have to be kept after the taxidermist. It's all archived online and you get email confirmation of your harvest.

Its dumb but as long as you possess any portion of the animal you need the tag/#s
