Wood duck mount - behind the scenes

Recommended Posts

I've always wondered what was involved in that process.  Thanks for sharing.  I currently have a woodcock mount standing on one leg and a ruffed grouse mount flying.  That taxidermist has long since retired and he was up in NY state at the time.  He used to do a lot of museum work including song birds, and he told me how tough most birds are to mount due to that thin skin they have.  Now I can see what he meant!  Nice work, Jay.

do you alawys cut the tail off. I never did on mine

No.. it ripped off during the process.

Although I do on pheasants and turkeys..

And quite honestly, it worked out easier on this duck having it separate. I fanned it out like I would have on pheasants and glued in place. Actually worked out better, I'll probably purposely remove the tails from now on

Lol. The good stuff can't be bought anymore. . That's old school. Now we either buy foam body or carve our own.. (see link of hand carved crow body )
