  1. Anyone need a big plastic drum? In great shape with cover. Ocean Township
  2. Well thank you all...I think you just saved me a lot of money!!
  3. I'd say it all comes down to the nose...The bred dogs have a pre-developed bird dog nose (or game in general). A mixed may not have that but I'd think it could be trained. Just thinking out loud, if it were me...Get a pheasant wing and see if the dog has that split second pause, the "ohhhh I know what THAT is" reaction that a pointer or even a flusher has. If so, you might be in luck. Then I would get some liquid pheasant scent and drizzle on a tennis ball or better yet, put a few drops in a small 8 oz water filled bottle, maybe a drip on the outside. Then go play hide and seek (its awesome in the snow). If he finds it, give it a treat for a first few times to get him hooked. If he responds to the scent in some form, you might have something! Could be a pointer, flusher or retriever! As birddogger says, "keep it fun" As to training, I could go on about some of the first hand training I've seen, but youtube has a lot of good videos. For new dog trainers, I am a fan of clicker training because if done correctly, you start to understand the mind of the dog. The Standing Stone Kennel series does a pretty decent job. At the very least, if you don't have a good hunter, you will have a well behaved, biddable friend!
  4. Want to replace all the interior doors on my old house. Looking at Jeld-wen solid core or solid wood. Strictly speaking about sound...is solid wood better than solid core?
  5. Funny you should ask.... My son's first hunt, coincidentally at the Mills, the dog points and the bird flies. He shoots, misses and it roosts in a tree. Now he already knows we don't shoot it, buuuuuut...he had missed a few times and was getting frustrated. So I threw a stick, a rock, another rock and eventually shot up the back side of the tree just to try and spook the rooster. Did not budge an inch. So we gave up. A guy who was watching asks if we were going to shoot it and we said it's no fun shooting a roosted bird. Boom! He walks off with the bird in hand The poor kid looked like he just had his lunch money stolen. But, twenty minutes and two birds later he realized patience pays off!
  6. That can't be right...if you were using a rage, it would have not only blown a hole 4" wide, it would have quartered and deboned it for you. Y'all know I'm right!
  7. I bought some artic shield pants years ago. On clearance they were $90. I wear a single layer of thermals under them and I've been in zero degrees and sweating. For a jacket, my wife got me a browning waterproof, multilayer system (similar to the Cabelas Whitetail extreme). Bottom line is it was expensive. Since then I have had two rubbermaid containers filled with winter hunting clothes I haven't used in years. I should have bought the best I could afford from the beginning. Then again, we've all been there be it cars, clothes, gear etc.
  8. If it's pouring no, but I actually look for rainy days and then watch the radar. If it looks like the rain will end before the sunset, I go out and wait. The deer seem less afraid and come out in droves. I've had many deer casually stroll between 10-15 yards when on a "good" day they would cautiously be 20+ yards away. My best have always come right when the rain is ending.
  9. It depends on how much you're putting in there and how fast you use it. Mine is 1 size down and works for me. Honestly though, if you can do a standup I'd suggest that. They self-defrost which is helpful. Stuff gets lost in the bottom of chest freezers. We had to clean out the built up ice recently and found pheasant...from 2015!
  10. Well after 7 years, my "top reviewed" 4.9 our of 5 stars LG french door fridge crapped out on me to the point of having to buy a new one. (This is after $900 in repairs a few years back for a compressor). I need a new motor and the ice maker is shot. It's 28.5 cubic feet which I kind of need with a 14 and 17 year old eating machines still home. We have a Jennair double oven and Thermador cooktop, but to be honest I fell into an exceptionally fortunate situation when I got them. I can't see spending $4,500 for a Jennair fridge if its going to have to be replaced in less than 10 years. I'll spend more for topline, but not if it's not worth it. What brand is most reliable and least reliable (and I'm talking anything from say $1,800 to $4,000 range) ? The repair guy said everything is built to last 5 years, so get the cheapest one I can buy and it will probably last as long as the most expensive. Any thoughts?
  11. Hour before to an hour after...needless to say it was a fruitless day. On the contrary, the shortest I ever had was three minutes and it was time to get the knife out! I honestly can say it was disappointing to have a hunt end so soon. I love just hanging in the woods.
  12. I was in a Cabelas in SC a few weeks back. Maybe 60 handguns, very little ammo. Guys said he's sold more handguns to first time users in the last three months than he has in five years.
  13. I agree with you Bonefreak, despite the kids argument, the program is great and should be a model for other parks. As to the insurance issues, IMO State laws supersede County laws. From an insurance aspect, so long as State laws are followed regarding hunters (i.e 10-13 must be accompanied by hunter 21 years or older) I don't see how youth hunters can be prevented if they are following State laws. That would be like saying 18 year old kids can't drive into a park. I just don't think anyone has ever challenged the Park System.
