Aging a Buck

yep deerage.com.  I used them once and it confirmed what I thought, a 6.5 year old buck!      187 lbs well after peak rut, is an absolute giant.  Congratulation.  That buck most likely would have dressed well over 200 lbs if shot in early October!     "Weight" is not always a true indicator of age though, but I would say it rules out the buck being anything "less" than 3.5 years old.  Antler size and mass are not even true indicators... All the indicators that people use to judge may help form a theory but that is all it really is - just a theory. Some deer have genetics that grow "weight" over "antler size". Some deer are just the opposite. Some deer have the genetics to achieve both, with NUTRITION and AGE being the final ingredient to a "super buck".

Nothing spooks deer more than my stank…

I agree he had to be over 200 lbs in Oct . What you can't see in the pic is how large and grey his head is, also his neck and chest were huge. His hinds were actually on the smaller size and where he must have loss most of his rutting weight. This is not a Farm deer mostly hills and swamps from NNJ. Everyone that saw it were saying 5-6 yrs old , it is the oldest looking bucks I have ever seen.

All the fresh sign in the area is showing the late rut is still on in force and he reaked. Hopefully I run into the Buck that snapped his Brows off .

I can't wait to get this buck's skull and teeth back from the taxidermist. I plan on getting him aged. He's a wacky 4 point that was the dominant buck down in Virginia. He was a beast. Live weight was around 200 pounds. I shot him on November 12, 2016.
