Muskrat Rut!

I set heavy for muskrats today. The ice is going out, days are getting warmer and longer. The male rats will start searching for females very shortly. This is the best time of the year for a nice muskrat harvest. Got to get them before they get too many love bites. When that happens, its the unofficial end of the season.

Good luck. I remember getting some rats bit up so bad before. Amazing the holes they take.

Did not break or set any records today. But I was not trying to do that. Ended up with 11 rats.  Mostly XXXL with a couple of kits in the catch. The musk glands on the male rats are almost at their maxium capacity. Most rats were caught in blind sets. Although a few were caught in lured sets using "Lenons" Muskrat lure. That stuff works good. Exuse the newspapers in my truck, I use them to wrap the rats in as I place them in the truck. Doing that insures that they will be almost dry when I get home.
