Endangered and Nongame Species Advisory Committee (ENSAC) Seeking Applicants for One Open Seat

Recommended Posts

The Endangered and Nongame Species Advisory Committee (ENSAC) is currently seeking applicants for one open seat on the Committee, representing a “qualified non-profit organization with a strong interest in promoting the nonconsumptive use of wildlife.” Applicants interested in serving in this seat should be professionals possessing a bachelor’s degree in the biological sciences, concerned with and supportive of the Endangered and Nongame Species Program and actively engaged in wildlife conservation/biology related research, outreach and education, and/or stewardship. Experience or interest in promoting diversity, equity, inclusion and environmental justice and/or serving diverse communities is a plus. ENSAC serves an advisory role to NJDEP Fish and Wildlife and the NJDEP Commissioner in matters pertaining to the management and protection of the State’s endangered and nongame wildlife. Formed in 1974 through an act of NJ state legislation, the Committee’s responsibilities include:

  • Recommending to the Commissioner status changes to the State’s endangered species and/or indigenous nongame wildlife lists.
  • Providing recommendations on policy and decision making regarding the protection and management of species considered state endangered, threatened, or special concern, or that have been classified as “Species of Greatest Conservation Need” (SGCN) in the state’s Wildlife Action Plan.
  • Reviewing and commenting on scientific data as it pertains to the management of nongame wildlife.

Consistent with the regulations governing its formation (N.J.A.C. 7:25-4.18), the Committee consists of 11 members concerned with and supportive of the Endangered and Nongame Species Program who are appointed by the NJDEP Commissioner after consultation with the Committee. Four members come from the research and academic community, one is a veterinarian or public health professional, three represent nonprofit organizations with strong interest in nongame wildlife, and three are appointed from the public-at-large.

Committee members serve a four-year term and are expected to attend bi-monthly meetings (six times per year) to receive updates on state and regional management initiatives and make recommendations on new and revised management policy, projects or regulations. Members are term-limited and may serve no more than two terms.

Interested parties should submit their resume for consideration to ENSAC-applications@dep.nj.gov, on or before January 30, 2023. Candidates meeting the qualifications noted above should document their knowledge and experience with wildlife related research, outreach and education, and/or stewardship related to the conservation of nongame species. The State is committed to inclusive and diverse representation on Councils and Boards and strongly encourages peoples from all backgrounds to apply.
