It seems like there are as many (or more) out and about now than during this same time last year..

I'm seeing the exact opposite up by me.  I'm backed up to state land and we have apple trees.  In years past we would have several different bears in the yard every day.  But the last 2 hunts we've had really seem to have reduced the population.  I've only had 1 bear in the yard that I've seen.
