Deer cape question

The butcher just called and told me my cape is ready to be picked up. My taxidermist won't be available till Friday. I'm picking the cape up tomorrow. What's the best way to keep the cape for a day?

Freezer, or kept as cold as possible.

 

Cooler with ice is not bad if no room in freezer

I don't have a freezer big enough and the butcher has zero room for it even for an extra day, I mean it took him over a week just to cape it out he's been so busy. I do have a cooler big enough

It's cold enough outside that if you wrap the head and cape in a plastic bag and put it in a cooler with ice the ice will keep it plenty cold enough until you get it to your taxidermist.

Being in the butchers cooler for the past 12 days plus another day in a cooler with ice won't hurt the hide?

Nope, it can be frozen for a long time time without damage - better cold than not. If not kept cold or frozen it can start to detoriate and slip apart.

Where you at? Bring it here I'll cape it for you tomorrow while you wait so you can get it in a freezer. Only takes 20 mins or so..

I'm in fredon twp.

 

For future, it's been plenty cold outside to keep it in a shady area in a bag.. but I don't like keep it fridge for 12 days.. usually 5 days is max.

I'm not saying it's spoiled, it's probably OK if it's been at 34 degrees the whole time..but I'm unsure as I've never had to work on one that went that long.

Pull on the hair, if it pulls out easily in chunks it's shot.

 

Probably fine tho.

 

Keep it cold and dry** don't let ice melt all over the skin.

Thanks for the offer jersey jay but I'm in south jersey. So my best bet is to put it in some trash bags and keep it on ice in a cooler?

That's next best option unless you call another taxidermist to Cape and get it frozen..
