Chicken Coop Question

In the process of setting up a chicken coop and was wondering if its possible to keep Quail and chickens together ??

NO, Do NOT keep them together in the same coop.

 

Quail cannot be housed in the same space with the chickens as quail and chickens cannot intermingle.

 

There is the slight issue of disease transmission, but this can be countered by good bird selection and cleanliness.

 

Quail can be raised alongside chickens but they do need their own coop section and aviary.

 

​Just set up a different coop for the Quail and you should. be OK.

 

 I went through this years ago, learned the hard way.

I cannot keep a Rooster on the property due to neighbors very close (13 feet between houses).

 

Hens only, I usually buy day old chicks and keep them 1 or 2 years tops, before they join the pot.

 

As for the quail. I raise my own from the spring eggs which are laid. A small hatching incubator works wonders for us.

 

Be careful though. The little buggers are cannibalistic. will eat each others toes right off.

 

As for the Quail type.  I just want to use for a food item only. So, I want calm birds.

 

The variety we have are a Japanese quail.

 

Now, Bobwhites on the other hand .... Very skittish, very flighty, not calm at all. Damn things will eat each other if given the chance.

 

 

Do you want chickens for eggs only?

 

Meat only?

 

Or a combination egg/meat bird?

For Meat bird get the Jumbo Cornish X Rocks. These are the best, and fastest growing.  Ready for eating in 7 to 9 weeks.

 

As for egg only chickens: Red Star or Black Star for brown eggs.

 

The Pearl-White Leghorn is an excellent producer of white shelled eggs. But, the SOB's are nasty cannibals. Be careful with these around each other and other chickens if kept close together.

 

Enjoy and have fun with them.

 

My wife and I feel like real farmers living close to the city. We give the neighbors next to either side of us eggs since we have them coming out our ears.

And it keeps for good neighbors so they don't call the police on us for noise or any issues with the bees.

 

Our Honey bees give us honey and wax. We make soap and stuff for us to use at home.
