Squirrels- good or bad?

Recommended Posts

These are over 15' tall and that was two summers ago

Is all that growth from acorns and/or seedling that you planted, or is it regeneration from cut trees?  I find that growth of regenerated from cut trees way out-performs seeding growth or growth from acorns, given existing rootstock.  But I agree that growth even from acorns exceeds the rate of one foot per year.  I get a ton of new oak (red and black) seedlings in my beds from acorns that I missed picking up as well as from where I dump them on my compost heap.

When it comes to oak regeneration which is a big part of your goal, squirrels are your friends.  They bury and forget more acorns than they bury and find again.  Mother Nature's way of helping to guarantee a regenerating forest.

And if they annoy you too much while on stand, I know a guy that can make a squirrel skinned rug mount for you.  :)
