They take some getting used to and regardless of the leg brace have a tendency to hurt ankles. Well, at least they did for me.

Same here!

Went up a tree in my back yard and it wasn't easy  . I wasn't digging in enough and I kept "slipping". It took considerable force to dig in to hold my weight, can I sharper it?

Anyway I looked them over  they are very well made.

You should be able to touch them up a little bit. Another thing you have to remember is keep your knees away from the tree. By instinct you want to hug the tree but that will change the angle of the spike and cause it to slip down through the bark. Make sure you use a climbing belt with it for safety and that it will allowing you to lean back away from the tree.
