Identify this toad

No prize at the end of this challenge, I just want to know since I can't determine which it is.  American or Fowler's?  And why.  To me it looks like both.  I'd like to be able to differentiate.  He came onto my deck to visit this evening.

I should have grabbed it for the guy who wants to photograph one. Could have snuck it onto his property for him to find

Looking at all the examples I have of both, wart spacing, and given your location, I am going with American Toad.  I just don't see the dark spots in which to count the warts and tell for sure. Plus, I am not a toad man..
