6/6/18 - American Woodcock Early Successional Habitat Project at Assunpink WMA

Recommended Posts

This is great news and shows that the Division is using the recently adopted Wildlife Action Plan that I was happy to be a part of.  Our Committee decided that rather than focusing on over 400 individual animal species that are of special concern, threatened, or endangered, we would focus on critical habitat types that are "umbrella" habitats for many species in decline.  Early successional forest habitat was one of the main habitat types in need of being created.  Not only will woodcock (and grouse in places) benefit, but there are many non-game birds, reptiles and amphibians that also use that habitat type that are in decline because of our aging forests.
