Both ends will be most effective and non lethal.. You must make the snares on both ends short enough to avoid entanglement from each other and if you out one in the center of the log you'd have to make it long enough for the animal to reach the bank so it's more effective to just use one on each side.

ends. make sure they can touch the ground.

if it's a hot crossing, ends and trail on each side.

I set both ends of the logs. Just make sure there is plenty of cable for them to reach the ground, but not too much to let them tangle up.
