  1. Hello guys, I'm a fly fisherman from south jersey (near LBI), I started trout fishing on trips up north but am getting more and more into saltwater species. When i'm at home, I have miles of beach to surf cast, jetties to fish, flats in the bay etc. Unoftunately though, I just started the semester at my university which is in Hoboken. There are plenty of piers and stuff that I see other anglers using, I just think I'd look like a bit of a chode shooting 80 feet of line behind me near all these people. I also dont know how great the fishing is right in the river there. So, does anyone have ideas for a relatively close spot where I could get some extra room? maybe do some wading? I'm really hoping to get on some striper this fall, I may have to go into the surf for that so I suppose I could take the LIRR out or something. Thanks!
  2. Hey all, I am the manager of the Lodge at River Valley in Asbury, NJ. We are currently looking to add 3 new members that mesh with clubs sense of sustainability and community. The Lodge at River Valley is a members only fly fishing club situated along 2 miles of the Musconetcong River in Asbury, New Jersey. Our members routinely catch brown, rainbow, and brook trout - one of the rare fisheries where all three species can be found together. We also host multiple clay pigeon and wing shooting events on the property, as well as world class dining and lodging. See more at thelodgeatrivervalley.com and contact us if you're interested in membership. Cheers & tight lines Alex Ford
  3. Hey all, It's almost that time of year! I am the marketing manager for the Lodge at River Valley, a members only fly fishing club situated along 2 miles of the Musconetcong River in Asbury, New Jersey. This year we are planning to expand a limited hunting membership. We are looking for a few bow only members to join for deer season, limited to 6 members. Members will have access to overnight accommodation (at a rate of $65/man), as well as free range on over 240 acres of farm and woodlands that are prime deer habitat. Full kitchen is available for use. The herd at River Valley is about 45-60, with 6-8 unique bucks. The entire property is managed for regenerative farming and wildlife, which has a halo effect of positive stewardship to the deer population. We are located in Zone 7, known for it's large population of trophy bucks. Additionally, we currently host 4 clay shoots a year at the Lodge, and will be hosting our first wing shoot this fall. The Lodge is home to 2009's trophy buck of the year. Taken by shotgun, it is the 4th largest buck ever taken in New Jersey (NJ Deer Hunting Records). Pictures attached. The genetics of this large buck are still very much influencing the current herd. Membership starts at $1700 per person for the season, up to 6 members. Also included with membership are dining privileges at Hawk Pointe, a course just down the road from the lodge. Please send me a message or reply to this thread if you are interested or would like some more information. Check out the Lodge website for pictures of the property. Cheers Alex Ford
  4. Greetings all, I am the head guide at the Lodge at River Valley. We are currently looking for up to 5 individuals to join as trial members for the fall fishing season, September 15 - December 15. Our piece of the Musconetcong is just shy of two miles, and has an extremely high rate of holdover fish. With our absolute cap of 20 members, you will often be the only person on the whole stretch. We do stock it, but with an aim to keep fish around for a long time and to keep up with a family of bald eagles! We are 100% fly fishing only / catch & release. The trial membership will run from September 15 - December 15, spanning ideal fall fishing conditions on the Musconetcong which means lots of aggressive streamer takes and colored up brookies, browns, and rainbows. The total cost will be $1700 for four months of pristine trout fishing on one of the New Jersey's most beautiful and undeveloped stretches of river, only an hour from downtown Manhattan. More information and pictures are available at www.thelodgeatrivervalley.com. If you are interested in joining for 2018, annual membership dues at the Lodge are $5700, with a $12,000 initiation which can be paid over the course of 3 years. Most of that goes towards maintenance of the club and the river, but we are also in the process of building a sporting clays course on the Lodge grounds. We currently host 4 clay shoots a year at the Lodge, and we will be hosting our first wing shoot this fall. Bow hunting memberships are also available for the season. There are no guest fees at the Lodge, and you are free to stay overnight in one of the lodge's 3 rooms with a small cleaning charge. Also included with membership are golf and dining privileges at Hawk Pointe, a course just down the road from the lodge. Please contact me at alexanderford120@gmail.com if you are interested and we will find a day for you to come out for a guided day of fishing. 8. Well yesterday was beautiful weather and the trout were rising steadily throughout the day on the Musky. I always bring a little scoop net with me to scoop the surface film with and noticed a mixture of flies. My entomology, while never good, was certainly better when I fly fished more frequently. From what I could tell there were some sulfur duns later in the afternoon and the last hour, pretty large ones (maybe size 12-14)...but very sparing on the hatch. Throughout the day, a mixture of caddis (around size 14-16) in tan body, and some pale green body...and the last hour saw some black wing/bodies coming off. Not sure if that was entirely random or there is a timing of "body color" hatches. Certainly a strong caddis hatch in that last hour. Also saw some small BWO coming off (around size 18-20 I believe) throughout the day. There was also another fly that I couldn't identify...maybe the last 2-3 hours of light it came off from time to time (from what I noticed, could have been coming off before then). I grabbed one out of the surface film and noticed it has a green body and bluish opaque wings. I would have thought BWO except the size of it, which was probably around a size 14, so I'm not sure what it was. Next time I'll have to take some pics of the duns to help with an id, I was too into trying to figure them out and cycling through flies I did manage to land a number of them, but it seemed like faked out hatch matching. One odd thing was I got a fair number of "swipes"...and I'm not sure if I was missing them or they just missed or refused the fly...as if they swam up to attack it, swiped at it, created the splash of a take, I waited for them to go down before setting the hook and just came up empty (this happened dozens of times with various flies). They refused 95% of the casts but then would take one. I kept cycling through flies that they'd swipe at put the ones they didn't away. This at least kept showing them something different from time to time, even if I couldn't match whatever they were taking consistently. Another angler who lives nearby came down the last hour or so, said he fishes it almost daily. He gave me a fly to try (CDC emerging sulfur I believe), but to no avail. Same situation, a few swipes at it, but no hookups. I went back to what was at least rendering a take from time to time. Fish caught on BWOs, mixture of caddis, and occasionally a sulfur. I dropped from 6X to 7X in hopes that they were being a little wary, it did help out with the hookups but not drastically so. Ultimately I'm definitely missing something in my box...because I felt like I should have had way more hookups with the surfacing action that was going on! All in all, a great day on the water and perfect weather. Definitely a ton of fish in the river, and I'm pretty sure stocking is over, so hopefully the crowds die down, making June an awesome month to hit the rivers and enjoy some dry fly action!
  9. I'm working on editing a bunch of pictures from North Carolina, but wanted to get one out to my friend of his biggest NC trout on the flyrod that he's caught to date! Was awesome to be there to share it with him, and it was a great day on the water! Lots more pics coming (in a blog entry) once they are all edited!
  10. From the album: BowhunterNJ's Album

A beauty of a rainbow my friend Kevin caught on the flyrod while I was visiting in May of 2013, his biggest NC trout to date! Glad I could be there to share the experience with him!
  11. So I was out doing a little fly fishing yesterday afternoon for the first time this year and had fish rising regularly. I tried a number of dries but really struggled trying to narrow down on what the trout were taking, as offering after offering got refused or had marginal success in a take (lots of looks, few takes). Anyone have any ideas what might have been coming off in the evenings this past weekend? My blog entry from yesterday's trip
