Training a dog to not grab things/chew when no one is watching?

My lab drove me nuts with this. They do outgrow it but for a few months he thought leave it meant chew whatever the fu@k u want!!! Started giving him bones from a deer and positive re enforcement when he chewed on that and eventually he got it...although sadly 2 barbies perished this morning from that savage.
