Amateur radio GMSR

I've been thinking about applying for the GMSR license. Mostly to try something new and or for emergency use. Some of the radios on the market are very affordable. 

I lost power about 8 times in a span of 3 weeks from all the rain a couple of weeks back, we I got lucky the trees didn't take out the internet I still wanted to have another communication source available. 

Just wanted to get an idea what anyone else use.
