Unfortunately conventional scanners are going by the wayside. There is a rebanding of the frequencies taking place. But most importantly is the fact that digital and encryption are slowly taking over. You can buy digital scanner but a lot of agencies are starting to use encryption that cannot be scanned. There is still a lot that can be picked up on them but there days are numbered with the newer technology available. There is a lot of good information on the radio reference site.
