New Jersey deer harvest numbers from the last century remind us of how drastically, and rapidly, wildlife numbers can decline and recover.

1901 – The reported harvest of deer is only 20 statewide.

1902-1908 - Deer seasons are closed entirely.

1915 – An either sex season of 4 days is open for deer. 291 bucks and 190 antlerless deer are harvested.

1937- The recorded deer harvest increases to 2,173 animals.

2001 - The highest recorded number of deer were harvested during the 2000-2001 season: 77,444 animals.

I am sure habitat change contributed to the increase more than anything else.

Absolutely.  In 1901 our deer densities, especially in the more rural areas of the state were probably more like Maine's are now (10 per square mile).  Endless edge habitat (suburban sprawl) and essentially year round food ballooned the numbers to where they're at today.

I live back in the woods you see

My woman and the kids and the dogs and me

I got a shotgun a rifle and a four wheel drive and a country boy can survive
