Trail cam problem

Recommended Posts

I have a bunch of trail cams. I have a stealth cam, 5 spypoints, & 2 moultrie cams. The stealth cam and spypoint cams are 3-5 yrs old. I put fresh batteries in them, test them, & seem to work. Then I put out in field and they fail. Odd. I Literally watched deer walk in front of the cams. My question is this. Are they just old and need replacement? I don't understand why when I test, they work at home then fail in field. Have any of you formatted the sd cards? Make a difference?? I have read that simply erasing does not get memory clear, so best to format. Any of you guys do this????

I format my sd cards when they are new on a laptop then every time i replace the batteries i format them in the cam with the option. this is what Bushnell recommends and I have not had issues with them yet.

As far as formatting cards, I only format them when they are brand new out of the package. No idea why your cams are not working when set up in the field Nick. Only cams I use are Moultries and Bushnells. Also some of my cards are still going strong for the past 6-7 years...They are PNY memory cards and the only ones I will use because of this.

I have had 3 different brands running and have had similar problems. Spoken with manufacturers  - and followed their advice, PROBLEM SOLVED!

When sharing cards between different brands you have to do a LONG FORMAT, which takes about 30 minutes.

You right click on the SD card in your folder view, there is a dropdown for "FORMAT", and you have to "unclick"  Quick format, and let it run.

Or - you can buy extra cards and mark SP for spypoint, BU for Bushnell,  BR for Browning,  MO for Moultrie, etc.

If you are dedicating cards to same brand, you don't have to do the LONG format.   I actually do the "quick format" for the cards I use within same brand as it is quicker than "delete".

Trust me this work Nick, I was ready to toss a few cams a few years ago....

Thanks. That is probably the problem....I too was going to throw away 4 cameras. So format cards & only use in same brand camera. Ill try it

I set up 2 cards for each camera I have and label them either 1 and 2 or a and b etc then only swap those cards out in one specific camera.  You can also format the cards in the camera itself which is actually better than doing it on a computer.  Since I started dedicating 2 cards to each camera the only issues I've had was a failure of the camera unrelated to the SD card.  When I used to just swap them camera to camera I ran into all kinds of weird issues.

I have about 10 cards and 8 cameras and pay no attention to which goes in which camera.  I erase them after I look at them either with a small camera or on my home computer.  No problems.

Surprised I don't have problems after reading this.:praying:
