.17 HMR strong enough for coyote?

Recommended Posts

I just picked up a Savage .17 HMR with BSA Sweet 17 scope at my local gun shop. It got heavy barrel with that accutrigger. I am very excited to take this out to smoke some varmints. I know this should work for fox and Groundhog, but if I am lucky enough to call in a yote. I want to be sure I can put him down.

I have the same rifle I've shot Fox at 50 yards and it knocks them right down. In my opinion I would use something bigger on a coyote

A mid range well placed shot will kill a yote. You may need to do some tracking if the shots far or off a bit, no room for error. I have a savage 93 with a redfield and shoot federal 17gr. A 20gr tnt may do better also

Inside of 100 yards and proper shot placement drops them every time for me. They do a couple of doughnuts and then go down with very minimal fur damage. I use the CCI A17 ammo that’s optimized for the Savage. Approximately 100 FPS faster and more accurate imo. Here’s a couple that my Savage .17 put down

Head shots will do the trick. But body shots you are going to do some tracking if you even kill it.

Like Spike said.......use the 20 grain bullet. It holds together much better than the 17 grain bullet.

All good advise especially moving up to 20gr  you have to rezero for the 20gr it wont be the same POI next purchase should be a 17 Hornet you won't have to worry if that will drop a Coyote in it's tracks. Welcome to the wonderful world o 17 caliber if you dont already have any there addicting I have a 17 HMR,  17 Hornet and a 17 Remington and there's a few more 17s to ad.
