Packing Up and Heading Out!

Saw lots of moose. The cows were getting ready to calve when I was there . Solitary cows would move off to dense alder thickets on mountainsides for a couple of days before giving birth. The grizzlies would hunt these cows out and hang around until the calf is born. and grab the calf. We found several cows like this and kept would keep checking back on them. On the last day of my hunt, we found a nice grizz shadowing a cow on a gravel bar in the Koyukuk River. The wind was wrong but we went for it and wound up just a little behind him when he chased the cow across a deep braid of the river.

There's a grizz in the bowl at the top of this mountain. We went up the right side. It took about an hour to get up there and when we peaked over the ridge he was already gone. The bears move amazing fast even when they seem to be plodding along digging in the rocks.

The bear headed into the trees and went down towards the river. We got out on a gravel bar but couldn't cross near where he was. We watched for a while and he turned and headed back up the mountain. We backed up to the river bank and glassed him as he made his way up finally turning and laying down on a hummock, watching his back trail. We went downriver a ways. Put on hip boots and crossed, circled up above his position and came down from the top and he was gone.
