Striking gold on the South Branch

Bucksnbows

Recommended Posts

Flows finally subsided on the SBR to get some time on the water. First fish came quick as water temps hit 51 today on the SBR. A small wild brown which is always a good sign.

Next few fish were rainbows with this nice holdover jumping several times on me and running me under a log that I had to wade out to and free my line. Luckily it was still on and I landed it after one last jump.

But the fish of the day was a solid 20" plus wild brown that pulled hard and long like only a big, wild brown can do.

Time to head home and enjoy a cold beverage. All fish released to fight another day.

They were eating both caddis pupa and "junk" like rainbow warriors.  Saw my first mayfly of the spring, a Quill Gordon.  But just the one.  By tomorrow we'll see a bunch more of them plus Hendricksons and Blue Qulls.  Plus more and more caddis every day now.  Temps climbing all week and staying warmer at night will fire up this river soon.
